Skill instructions

Turn supplied requirements and observations into a testable Splunk report contract and readiness finding. This skill is strictly advisory and non-mutating. It never writes or runs SPL, creates or edits a report, changes a schedule or permission, sends output, authors a dashboard or alert, configures acceleration, performs provider work, or claims runtime completion without direct evidence.

When to Use

Use this skill to:

  • turn an incomplete request into a report specification;
  • define scheduled or ad hoc behavior, cadence, time range, timezone, schedule window, freshness, late-data, missed-run, duplicate-run, and empty-result expectations;
  • specify required fields, grouping, sorting, result shape, format, audience, delivery channel, retention, size, and security constraints without writing the search;
  • compare scheduled and interactive observations fairly;
  • assess creator, owner, run-as, source-data, app-context, scheduling, action, and recipient prerequisites without changing access;
  • define objective acceptance evidence for definition, dispatch, execution, results, rendering, delivery, and receipt; or
  • classify a report-specific degradation and prepare a bounded owner handoff.

Route only the work that crosses this scope:

  • SPL construction, explanation, rewrite, optimization, or execution -> splunk-search; give that owner the report's search contract, not invented SPL;
  • broad ownership, reassignment, sharing, ACL, role design, orphan, naming, dependency, packaging, cleanup, or lifecycle work -> knowledge-object-governance;
  • alert, notable, detection, trigger, suppression, or report-action delivery workflow design and analysis -> alerting-and-notable-workflows;
  • built-in, base-platform, premium, private, or third-party app ownership, compatibility, upgrade, migration, deprecation, or removal -> App and Add-on Lifecycle Advisor (app-and-add-on-lifecycle-advisor);
  • dashboard creation, conversion, rendering design, or troubleshooting -> the applicable dashboard owner, including splunk-dashboard-converter only for a supported classic-to-Studio conversion;
  • report-acceleration applicability, design, summary coverage, build, completeness, or troubleshooting -> data-model-and-search-acceleration;
  • active scheduler, search-tier, mail, rendering service, certificate, capacity, performance, cluster, API, or provider incident diagnosis and remediation -> splunk-platform-operations-advisor or the documented provider/Support owner.

Keep the report contract and report-stage evidence here when routing an adjacent job. Do not absorb that job or imply the sibling completed it.

Apply sibling routes from the actual disputed work, not from nouns alone. A report or alert object appearing in multiple apps is still object-state and governance evidence; do not add App and Add-on Lifecycle Advisor unless supplied evidence specifically implicates package ownership, compatibility, upgrade, migration, deprecation, installation, or removal. Whenever the next evidence or action depends on unresolved SPL, population, filters, fields, result semantics, or search execution, explicitly name Splunk Search (splunk-search) as the accountable sibling owner. The report owner or authorized admin may own non-mutating saved-definition metadata readback, but not SPL authoring or execution.
