Splunk Cloud
This app contains some useful tools for Splunk Administrators.

In its initial launch state it contains two tools aimed at admins who are trying to track down and eliminate wildly inefficient ad-hoc searches that users are running on their deployment.

Note to run this app you must also install the Canary app from Splunkbase.

Release Notes

Version 0.6
June 28, 2022

User Activity now also displays which sourcetypes were matched by each search. Likewise this is rolled up into the tab summaries. The pain calculation is attributed to each sourcetype according to the proportion of matching events that were actually of that sourcetype in each search.
- User Activity is now capable of seeing whether each search uses an index term in the initial search command and reflects this as a variable "has_index_term". which can be "yes" or "no", or if the initial command is not search at all, null. Searches with has_index_term="no" are assigned a much higher "pain" value.
- Improvements in the calculate_pain macro to not penalize searches with high scan count ratio but with execution times of just a few seconds.
- auditextractor command is now a streaming command again. This should provide a significant boost to performance in large environments

Version 0.5
June 10, 2022
  • Functionality - in User Activity the searches tab now has a field picker within which many optional fields are now available.
  • Fixed a bug where the "hosts" pulldown would also show HF instances and instances that ran no searches at all.
  • Some tweaks and improvements to how the "pain" field is calculated. (Note the calculation is in a macro and thus editable by the admin).
  • Fixed a bug where the time range options in the TimePicker were not properly organized into submenus.
Version 0.4.1
June 9, 2022
  • Functionality - Added a "host" pulldown and also a "host" tab to the User Activity page. While some extremely large deployments may end up with an uncomfortably large number in the pulldown, this at least offers a way to narrow down to a particular tier or a particular deployment.
  • Fixed a bug where audit log fields that had underscores in them (notably savedsearch_name), would not be extracted and would disrupt the extraction of other fields.
  • Fixed a bug in Search Analyzer where it was accidentally escaping search language chars, eg any spl with square brackets would fail
  • Fixed a bug in the User Activity page's drilldown to Search Analyzer, where it was accidentally escaping the search when it passed it as an argument.
Version 0.4
June 3, 2022
  • The app no longer relies on splunk's field extraction in the audit events. Instead it uses its own search command "auditextractor" to reliably extract the fields. In previous versions the User Activity ran into a wide range of problems (just as Splunk's Monitoring Console runs into the same problems today).
  • The app now requires Canary be at least 1.5.4, and will alert the user if it is missing or if the version is too old.
  • Search Analyzer now has a second tab that gives the "execution cost" information of each command.
  • The code that parses the search language to identify commands now recursively expands macros correctly, from app-level, global-level and system-level, even when those macros are specifying arguments. Previous versions didn't attempt expansion if arguments were present.
Version 0.3
May 25, 2022

This is the first public release. Check back soon for new versions.
