The README contains deployment instructions. Unpack the app on your Deployment Server. You must first download the desired UF msi package from splunk.com to the static/ folder. Then, modify the variables in bin/upgrade-wrapper.bat to reflect the filename/version of the UF msi. Also enable the scripted input in local/inputs.conf.
After deployment, the scripted input will execute on startup. It will compare the app's msi version to the already-installed version. If upgrade is needed, it will stop the SplunkForwarder service, run msiexec, and start the service. The script zeroes out the msi file afterwards to conserve storage.
Be aware that the genrandompassword parameter will record the password inside a .log file in the static folder.
Tested on Win 2012 and newer, x64. Assumes that the UF if running as SYSTEM, and PATH environment variable is set well.
Note that Splunk has deprecated Windows Server 2012 R2 with version 8.0.0. From my testing, v8.0.3 of the UF works on 2012, but is not officially supported. To prevent install of v8 on 2012, You can change the test in bin/upgrade.bat from WIN_VERSION<6.2 to WIN_VERSION<10.0 .
