Overview
Details
* Description *
Users often land in Splunk with no clue where to begin. Use this app and it's over 20 pre-built panels to create an effective starting page for your users.

This app builds upon the concepts and philosophies outlined in the blog posts Introducing the “Welcome Page Creator” (https://www.splunk.com/blog/2016/09/01/introducing-the-welcome-page-creator) and Your Splunk Workspace (https://www.splunk.com/blog/2017/02/07/your-splunk-workspace)

READ THIS FIRST

The Welcome Page Creator for Splunk is not a traditional app. It is a collection of helpful pre-built panels you can add to a dashboard to help users make the most of Splunk and the data therein.

To see a listing of all the included prebuilt panels, view the Panel Showcase by selecting the respective "Launch app" link within the App Manager (Apps -> Manage Apps).

Welcome Pages & Workspaces

The Welcome Page Creator for Splunk includes a app template for creating workspaces with welcome pages.

A "welcome" page is a default dashboard within a Splunk users default app that contains informative welcoming information.

A "workspace" is an app that a team or functional group uses to segregate their knowledge objects from other users on the platform.

The Welcome Page Creator for Splunk will NOT show up in the Splunk app navigation menu since users are not meant to access it directly.

Installation Instructions

  1. Splunk Install Install the Welcome Page Creator on any Search Heads in your environment. The Welcome Page Creator should NOT be installed to any Forwarders, Indexers, etc that are not also Search Heads. Refer to the standard methods for Splunk Add-on installs as documented for a Single Server Install or a Distributed Environment Install.

  2. Stage Workspace Template The Welcome Page Creator contains a Workspace app template. To take advantage of it, copy the folder $SPLUNK_HOME/etc/apps/welcome/static/workspace to $SPLUNK_HOME/share/splunk/app_templates/workspace (FYI: Restart not required!)

  3. Create Workspace from Template Select the 'workspace' template while creating a Splunk app.

  4. Customize Created Workspace Navigate to that new Workspace (app). Notice that you were automatically directed to a 'welcome' page. Edit that 'welcome' page as desired by adding from pre-built panels included with this app.

  5. Customize Panels You may notice a lock icon while trying to customize your panels. That is because the panels are prebuilt. Learn how to properly edit a prebuilt panel so changes are reflected across the deployment.

Jan. 7, 2016

New Panels:
* Waiting on your Splunk Admins? - resources for users to gelp help without being dependent on admins
* Candidates for Promotion to Power User - Most active users that are not already in power user roles.
- Admins should embrace and educate these users so they can teach the gospel of Splunk to their team members. This results in less work for Admins thanks to more people with expertise.
- There are two versions of this dashboard. The tagcloud that is inline on the launchpad because it uses custom javascript and css. There is also a prebuilt panel that produces the same information as a simple table.
